I wanna tell you

how morning’s dewdrops dry off the grass stalks

so quickly in spring’s ascending

heat and light, the tiny prisms shrinking,

bursting into hot steam, until all that’s left

is the clear circle of film from the top of the water,

a tiny, shiny dot reminding each blade

that last night the dew

clung to its green ridges

and didn’t even slide off when the wind rippled through the field

I wanna tell you

how when Jeremy Brown picked at his teeth

while gazing blankly out the back window

he could still taste the choco-chunk ice cream

that had dribbled down his knuckles before

his attention slipped and cone smashed

on the sweet roasting pavement—

how he closed his eyes by the windowsill

with the tip of

his pinky finger in his mouth

and remembered dragging

his tongue across the rich milk and ice

while the taste, now residual,

sticky on his swirling fingerprint,

had enveloped all his mouth with its bitter cocoa flavor

Let me tell you

how the night before she left you

her to-be new lover

removed her barriers layer by layer

smoothing the cotton up over her sides

whispered “tell me when to stop” to her carotid artery

and the only thing that made her say “stop”

was when his pointed fingers

reached the clasp of her bra

and she could still feel how that morning you

had graciously hooked it for her,

fumbling good naturedly while she giggled and said

“you’ve gotta put together

what you took apart”, baby,

she could still feel your hands so clearly

though they had only lingered a moment.

And how that day when she left you

she trickled away from your apartment

like sap running from the bark

of a maple tree so old

she couldn’t even imagine living its lifetimes

how she stumbled on the concrete sidewalk

and felt smaller than the ants crawling along roots

the ants that only live a season

and don’t know why they do the things they do

they just do them

and she wondered if she were an ant

doing things based on instinct

if she would still be in your bed,

or if that was exactly the problem.

I wanna tell you

how the morning before King Henry

had Anne Boleyn beheaded

he rolled over and tried

to trace the way the sunlight struck the back of her shoulder

freckle to freckle

clean white skin crisp against the linen

and then he beheaded her.
